Most of us grew up knowing the importance of having three meals a day. Why three? Our bodies need consistent fuel throughout the day to keep running, and spacing it out amongst three meals provides the fuel at the right time.
Our partner home in Liberia, Mercy Mission, supports the growth and care of 27 children who are true orphans - meaning they have lost both their parents. As Liberia itself is still re-building from years of war and turmoil, the home struggles to provide consistent nutrition for the kids. As of now, the children only eat twice a day: once in the morning right before school, and once again in the late afternoon when school is done. This simply is not enough for growing children - especially if they are using their minds during school.
What are the benefits of a third meal? A third meal will keep children feeling full and allow them to focus during school. More nutrients will contribute to their development and ensure they have not only the right types of nutrients, but the proper amount needed to grow healthy and happy.
How are we providing this crucial third meal? We are achieving this goal with a two-fold approach: by eliminating the home’s energy costs, we are re-directing funding formerly used to pay for electricity to providing a third meal. Our solar panel project will provide Mercy Mission with enough electricity to last through the night, eliminating the costly purchase of coal and fuel for their generator. The money they will save is more than enough to provide each child with a third meal, daily. And as a bonus, the project is good for the planet.
How can you help? By investing in this project, you are part of a long-term, sustainable initiative to keep children healthy and performing well in school, as well as doing good for the planet. What’s not to love?
A heartfelt thank you from the Kitechild Team and the team and children at Mercy Mission!
